Recording of full BW band show recorded live at Urban Spree, Berlin, on June 2, 2019. 38 minutes of ultra-repetitive, swooning/stomping no-bullshit drone-punk napalm... THE BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD.

Earlier this year we released Bobby Would’s Baby LP on our shop label. Come summer, he'd got together a six-strong band together to flesh out his DIY creations and tour the album round Europe - “a real young kraut-ensemble” (his words!) featuring a Bulgarian synth player, Israeli drummer, and sundry dead-eyed Germans. We were droolingly keen to book a show for them in London, which then somehow mushroomed (long story) into what became our 2nd birthday fest in May - with Lolina, Bridget Hayden, Thomas Bush and the rest. But the Bobby Would full sextet extravaganza, which we’d envisaged as the centre-piece of the whole thing, wasn’t meant to be - UK Border Force put paid to that - leaving your man to style it out bravely on his own, with only an iPhone and a sharp haircut for accompaniment. Pure bottle! It was sick. But still left us hankering to hear the full group incarnation, which Bobby, not a man prone to exaggeration, had once described as sounding summat like "Peter Gutteridge meets Can”. We quite literally begged him (Bobby Must) to record a show before the members scattered at the end of summer, and thank fuck, a couple of weeks later, he managed to get their Berlin show down on tape.

It was a selfish request, just wanted a copy for private listening and knee-rubbing. But it turned out so good, we had do the right thing and run off a few copies for the likes of you - and so we find ourselves frantically dubbing 'em in the shop this week (ta Paco).

On stage, Baby’s swooning, acid-fried jangle is given a full-throttle caveman-motorik makeover - the Can/Gutteridge ref is spot-on, the 39 Clocks vibes are undeniable, Bobby’s death-surf guitar and mournful baritone reminds me of those insane GFrenzy tracks on the recent Heavy Space comp, or maybe - I'm not being glib - Joy Division if Link Wray had stepped in for Barney… And if you consider The Clean’s ‘Point That Thing...’ to be the melon-slicing essence/summit of rock’n'roll (and if you don’t, why not?), listen to BW & Family’s ultra-propulsive, stripped-to-the-bone takes on ‘Fade To Black’, ‘Suzanne’ and ‘Get Off My Bus’ here. Rest assured, the strung-out, MDMA-bleary TRUE ROMANCE of "Baby" (you and me / shiverin’ in the street) has not been done away with: check the haunting, hungover-hooligan cover of The Ronettes (!) and the stately, spacewalk of ‘Imaginary’… ugh, it’s all so good. Remember this summer: while you busy scraping the barrel for any last unheard-of c**t from the '80s who knew how to program a drum machine, this lot were on the road, HAMMERING out the songs your children will ask you about.

Edition of 50-ish, with photocopied inlays.
